WHAT IS ROSE GOLD?

Rose gold is a mixture of yellow gold, silver and copper. The copper gives the naturally yellow gold a redder colour. The silver, on the other hand, helps to tone down the redness of the copper, achieving a subtle pink shade. And yes, when it comes to purity, rose gold is no different from yellow gold or white gold. Gold, whatever the colour variation, must always be combined with harder metals as pure gold is too soft and would quickly lose its original shape. And one further benefit, when compared to white gold (which is rhodium coated to give it a whiter surface) solid rose gold jewellery will not require any maintenance during its lifetime.

ORIGINS OF ROSE GOLD

Although rose gold might seem like a new trend, it is actually nothing new, it’s just having a comeback! While we don’t know exactly who came up with the idea of adding copper to gold and creating this beautiful shade of gold, most sources point to Russia. It first became popular in Russia at the beginning of the 19th century. In fact, rose gold used to be referred to as Russian gold. It has also been popular during the 1920’s and 1950’s, so you often find “retro jewellery pieces ” in rose gold.

HOW TO WEAR ROSE GOLD

Gold with pink tones tends to complement all skin tones, so it’s very easy to wear. Many people also consider it the most romantic precious metal because of its pink lustre, so rose gold is also making its way to engagement rings and rings in general. Depending on the design of the jewellery, rose gold pieces can have a 1920’s/vintage look or a very contemporary feel to it. There is also no harm in combining rose gold pieces with metals in other colours. In the 1920's it has been quite common to find rings and other pieces of jewellery combining all shades of gold - rose, yellow & white.
